What a sports massage actually does
A good deep tissue massage is more than just feeling nice for an hour. Here is what regular treatment does for your body and your training.
Releases tight muscles
Firm, targeted pressure breaks down the knots and adhesions that build up in overworked muscle, restoring length and easing that locked-up feeling.
Speeds up recovery
By boosting circulation and helping clear metabolic waste from hard sessions, massage helps your muscles bounce back faster between training days and races.
Improves your range of motion
Looser, more supple muscles move through a fuller range. That means a longer stride, a deeper squat and less fighting against your own stiffness.
Reduces injury risk
Tight, imbalanced muscles are where overload injuries start. Keeping them supple helps reduce the recurring strains that keep interrupting your training.
Eases everyday tension
You do not have to be an athlete. Desk posture, stress and long days leave their mark too, and a sports massage unwinds the neck, shoulders and back that carry it.
Helps you train consistently
The athletes who improve are the ones who train without interruption. Staying loose and recovered is how you keep showing up week after week.
One treatment, several jobs
Keep your body moving well
Regular sessions stop small tightnesses building into something that affects your training. Think of it as servicing the car before it breaks down, not after.

Race-ready, then recovered
A lighter, stimulating session before a big race or competition to get you primed. A deeper, flushing session afterwards to clear the legs and speed up recovery.

Get into the stubborn stuff
Slow, firm work on the tight, knotted areas that foam rolling never quite reaches. Tight calves, locked-up shoulders, an unforgiving lower back.

Stay ahead of the niggles
By keeping muscles supple and balanced, a regular sports massage helps reduce the overload patterns that lead to the same old recurring strains.

Your session, start to finish
No mystery, no awkwardness. Every session starts with a short safety check, then we get straight into the hands-on work. Here is exactly how your 45 minutes at our Baltic Triangle clinic goes.
A quick 5 minute assessment
Before any hands-on work, your therapist runs a short check, asking about your training, where you feel tight or sore, and your general health. This makes sure there are no reasons not to treat you, so the massage is safe as well as effective. Then we get started.
Settle in, stay comfortable
Wear loose, comfortable clothing. You only expose the area being treated, and towels keep you covered throughout. No pressure, no fuss.
The work itself
Firm, deliberate deep tissue work on the muscles that need it. It can feel intense in the tight spots, but never unbearable. Your therapist checks pressure and adjusts as they go.
Walk out looser
You leave moving more freely, with simple advice on stretches, hydration and when to come back. Most people feel the benefit straight away and even better the next day.
Then keep on top of it
A single session resets you, but the real change comes from staying consistent. Book a monthly massage as maintenance to keep your muscles loose and stay ahead of the niggles before they become injuries.
A massage is not always what you need.
You feel tight, not injured
- Your muscles feel stiff, tight or fatigued from training
- You want to recover faster between sessions or races
- You are carrying general tension and want to move well
- Nothing is sharp, swollen or getting worse, you just feel tight
- You want maintenance to stay ahead of niggles
Something is actually wrong
- You have a specific injury, or sharp or worsening pain
- The same problem keeps coming back no matter what you try
- There is swelling, pins and needles, numbness or weakness
- Pain is stopping you training, sleeping or moving normally
- You want a diagnosis and a proper rehab plan, not just relief

Questions, answered
How long is a session?
A sports massage at FM Physio is a 45 minute session. It starts with a quick 5 minute assessment to check there are no reasons not to treat you, then your therapist gets straight into focused deep tissue work on the areas that matter, with some advice before you leave.
Will a sports massage hurt?
A deep tissue sports massage can feel intense in tight spots, but it should never be unbearable. Your therapist works to your tolerance and adjusts the pressure throughout. Most people describe it as a good kind of discomfort, and you walk out feeling looser, not bruised.
How often should I have a sports massage?
It depends on your training load. Someone deep in marathon prep or lifting heavy several times a week often benefits from a session every two to four weeks. For general maintenance, monthly keeps things in check.
What should I wear?
Comfortable, loose clothing like shorts and a t-shirt works well. You only need to expose the area being treated, and your therapist will use towels so you stay covered and comfortable throughout.
Do I need a referral?
No. You can book directly online or by phone, with no GP or specialist referral needed. Appointments are often available the same week.
What is the difference between a sports massage and a deep tissue massage?
There is a lot of overlap. Deep tissue refers to the firm, slow technique that reaches the deeper layers of muscle. A sports massage uses deep tissue work but is tailored to your training and the specific load patterns of your sport, often combining several techniques in one session. Your therapist adjusts the approach to what your body needs on the day.
