Pulled your hamstring?

Hamstring strains usually happen during sprinting, kicking, or stretching under load, a sudden sharp pain at the back of the thigh. They are extremely common in running and field sports, and notorious for coming back when players return too soon. Proper rehab and testing make the difference.

  • Sudden sharp pain at the back of the thigh during sprinting or kicking
  • Tightness or pulling that makes you stop or slow down
  • Tender and sometimes bruised along the hamstring
  • Pain stretching or loading the back of the thigh
  • Weakness or wariness sprinting or accelerating
  • A history of recurrence strains that keep coming back

Causes and types

Hamstring injuries we treat

Getting the specific cause right is what makes treatment work. We assess and treat:

Acute hamstring strains

Sudden strains from sprinting, kicking, or rapid loading.

Recurrent strains

Hamstrings that keep re-tearing from incomplete rehab.

High hamstring tendinopathy

Pain high at the sitting bone from running and load.

Hamstring overload

Tightness and niggles from training spikes.

Return-to-sport gaps

Strength and capacity gaps that risk re-injury.

Post-tear rehab

Rebuilding after a significant strain or tear.

Our approach

How we treat hamstring strains

01

Assess the injury

We grade the strain and assess strength, flexibility, and the demands you are returning to, so the rehab matches your sport.

02

Progressive loading

A structured strength and loading programme that rebuilds the hamstring's capacity, the proven way to recover and reduce recurrence.

03

Return-to-sport testing

We test strength, power, and sprint capacity before clearing you, so you return genuinely ready, not just pain-free, which is what cuts re-injury.

Hamstring Strain FAQs

How long does a hamstring strain take to heal?

It depends on the grade. Minor strains can settle in a couple of weeks, more significant ones take several weeks to a couple of months. Rushing back is the main cause of recurrence, so proper rehab and testing matter.

Why do my hamstring strains keep coming back?

The biggest reason is returning to sport before strength, power, and sprint capacity are fully restored. Pain easing is not the same as being ready. We use return-to-sport testing to make sure you genuinely are.

Should I stretch a strained hamstring?

Aggressive stretching early can aggravate a strain. Recovery comes mainly from progressive loading and strengthening, not stretching. We guide you on what to do and when.

When can I sprint again?

Only once strength and power are restored and you pass return-to-sport testing. Returning to sprinting too early is the classic cause of re-tear, which is exactly what we work to prevent.
