Sharp pain on the outside of your knee?
IT band syndrome is one of the most common causes of outer knee pain in runners and cyclists. It typically comes on at a predictable point in a run, a sharp or burning pain on the outside of the knee that forces you to stop. Despite the name, endless foam rolling is rarely the fix.
- Sharp or burning pain on the outside of the knee
- Comes on predictably at a similar distance or time into a run
- Worse downhill and on stairs or descents
- Eases with rest then returns at the same point next run
- Tender on the outer knee where the band crosses the joint
- Not fixed by foam rolling alone, despite the common advice
Causes and types
Why IT band syndrome happens
Getting the specific cause right is what makes treatment work. We assess and treat:
Training load spikes
A jump in running or cycling volume the body is not ready for.
Hip and glute weakness
Weak hip control increasing strain at the outer knee.
Running mechanics
How you load and control the leg under fatigue.
Downhill and camber
Descents and cambered roads increasing the load.
Cycling set-up
Bike fit and cleat position contributing in cyclists.
Returning too fast
Building mileage back too quickly.
Our approach
How we treat IT band syndrome
Accurate diagnosis
We confirm it is the IT band and not other causes of outer knee pain, and find why it is being overloaded.
Settle and strengthen
Hands-on treatment to ease symptoms, plus targeted hip, glute, and leg strengthening, the part most people miss.
Rebuild running or cycling
A graded return plan plus mechanics and set-up review, so the knee handles the load when you build back.

IT Band Syndrome FAQs
Why does foam rolling not fix my IT band?
Because the IT band itself is rarely the root cause, it is usually overloaded due to weakness and control issues at the hip, plus training load. Rolling may ease symptoms briefly but does not address why it is being overloaded.
How long does IT band syndrome take to settle?
With the right strengthening and load management, often a few weeks to a couple of months. The timeline depends on how long you have had it and how consistent the rehab is.
Can I keep running?
Often in a reduced form, avoiding the descents and distances that trigger it, while we strengthen and address the cause. Sometimes a short reduction is needed first.
Why does it always hurt at the same point in a run?
IT band syndrome is a load-tolerance problem. Once the tissue reaches its limit, usually at a predictable distance, it flares. Building capacity through strength and graded load raises that limit.
