Pain below your kneecap?

Patellar tendinopathy, or jumper's knee, is pain and overload of the tendon connecting the kneecap to the shin. It is common in basketball, voleyball, running, and jumping sports. The pain warms up with activity then aches afterwards, and rest alone tends not to fix it.

  • Pain just below the kneecap localised to the patellar tendon
  • Worse with jumping landing, squatting, and stairs
  • Warms up then aches better during activity, sore afterwards
  • Tender to press on the tendon below the kneecap
  • Worse with training spikes more jumping or loading than usual
  • Lingers for months because rest does not rebuild the tendon

Causes and types

Why jumper's knee happens

Getting the specific cause right is what makes treatment work. We assess and treat:

Jumping load spikes

A spike in jumping, landing, or change-of-direction volume.

Quad and calf weakness

Insufficient strength to handle the load through the tendon.

Reduced ankle or hip control

Mechanics shifting load onto the patellar tendon.

Hard surfaces and volume

Court and training load increasing tendon stress.

Returning too fast

Building back too quickly after a break.

Previous episodes

Tendons that flared before and were not fully rehabbed.

Our approach

How we treat patellar tendinopathy

01

Accurate diagnosis

We confirm it is the patellar tendon and not other anterior knee pain, since the treatment differs.

02

Progressive loading

A structured quad and tendon loading programme is the proven foundation, calming pain while rebuilding the tendon's capacity.

03

Fix the cause

Jumping load, landing mechanics, and strength through the whole leg, so the tendon holds up when you return to sport.

Stubborn cases

Shockwave for chronic tendons

For patellar tendinopathy that has stalled despite loading, shockwave therapy can stimulate repair. We use it alongside your loading programme, not instead of it.

Stimulates repair

Shockwave promotes healing in chronic patellar tendon tissue.

Alongside loading

Used with progressive loading, the foundation of tendon rehab.

3 to 6 sessions

Most patients improve within a short course alongside exercises.

Patellar Tendinopathy FAQs

Should I rest jumper's knee?

Complete rest is not the answer for tendon pain. The tendon needs progressive loading to rebuild. We usually modify your jumping and training load rather than stopping, and load the tendon deliberately.

How long does it take to recover?

Caught early, often 6 to 12 weeks of loading. Long-standing cases take longer and may benefit from shockwave. Consistency with the loading programme is the biggest factor.

Can I keep playing sport?

Often in a modified form. We reduce jumping and landing volume while loading the tendon, rather than stopping entirely where possible. Some acute cases need a short reduction first.

Why does it keep coming back?

Recurrence usually means the underlying load and strength issues were not addressed. We treat the cause, jumping load, mechanics, and strength, not just the painful flare.

What are your prices?
