Tendon pain that just will not settle?
Tendinopathy is one of the most misunderstood and mismanaged injuries we see. People rest it, it feels better, they return to activity, and the pain comes straight back. That is because tendons do not heal with rest alone, they need the right kind of progressive load to rebuild their capacity.
Tendinopathy has a few telltale signs:
- Pain that warms up with activity then aches afterwards
- Stiffness and pain first thing in the morning
- Worse the day after training or activity
- Tender over a specific tendon rather than a general area
- Comes back every time you return to sport after resting
Get the loading right and tendinopathy is very treatable. Rest it and wait, and it tends to drag on for months.
What we treat
Tendinopathies we treat
Tendon pain can affect almost any joint. We treat the full range, including:
Achilles tendinopathy
Pain and stiffness in the Achilles, common in runners and active people.
Patellar tendinopathy (jumper's knee)
Pain in the tendon below the kneecap, common in jumping and running sports.
Gluteal tendinopathy
Pain on the outside of the hip, often worse lying on that side or on stairs.
Tennis and golfer's elbow
Tendon pain on the outside or inside of the elbow, common in racquet sports and lifters.
Rotator cuff tendinopathy
Shoulder tendon pain with overhead movement, reaching, or lifting.
Hamstring and other tendinopathies
Proximal hamstring, wrist, and other tendon pain from overload or training spikes.
Stubborn cases
Shockwave therapy for chronic tendons
For tendinopathy that has lasted more than 6 to 8 weeks despite loading, shockwave therapy can kick-start healing in tendons that have stalled. We use it alongside a loading programme, not instead of one.
Stimulates repair
Shockwave promotes blood flow and collagen repair in tendons stuck in a chronic state.
Paired with loading
It works best combined with progressive loading, the proven foundation of tendon rehab.
3 to 6 sessions
Most patients see meaningful improvement within a short course alongside their exercises.

Questions? We have got answers
Why will my tendon pain not go away with rest?
Because tendons do not heal with rest alone. Rest reduces the pain temporarily, but the tendon stays weak, so the pain returns the moment you go back to activity. Tendons need progressive loading to rebuild their capacity, which is the core of how we treat them.
How long does tendinopathy take to recover?
It depends on how long you have had it. Tendinopathy caught early can settle in 6 to 12 weeks. Chronic cases take longer and may benefit from shockwave alongside loading. Starting the right programme early makes a big difference.
Should I stop my sport completely?
Usually not. Complete rest is rarely the answer and often slows recovery. We typically modify your load rather than stop entirely, keeping you active while the tendon rebuilds.
Does shockwave therapy work for tendons?
For stubborn, chronic tendinopathy, shockwave can help kick-start healing when used alongside a loading programme. It is not a standalone fix, but a useful tool for tendons that have stalled.
Do I need a referral?
No referral needed. You can book directly. We also accept Simplyhealth and Medicash cash plans.
