Powerlifting Injury Physiotherapist Liverpool

The squat, bench, and deadlift load the body near its limits. Powerlifting injuries need a physio who understands maximal loading, meet prep, and getting you back under the bar, not one who just says deload.

Powerlifting Physio physiotherapy at a Liverpool clinic

Something tweaked under a heavy bar?

Powerlifting pushes the squat, bench press, and deadlift to maximal loads, and the body to its limits. Injuries here are rarely random, they usually show up at a specific point in a lift, under specific loads. Treating them means understanding the demands of the big three, not just generic rehab.

Common issues we see in powerlifting athletes:

  • Lower back pain from heavy deadlifts and squats
  • Shoulder pain from benching and the bench setup
  • Knee pain from maximal squatting
  • Hip and groin pain from squat and deadlift loading
  • Elbow pain from benching volume and lockout
  • Niggles near a meet as loads peak in prep

What we treat

Powerlifting injuries we treat

We understand the specific demands of the sport and treat the injuries that come with it, including:

Lower back pain

From heavy deadlifts and squats, the most common powerlifting complaint.

Shoulder pain

From bench press volume, setup, and lockout.

Knee pain

Patellar tendinopathy and anterior knee pain from maximal squatting.

Hip and groin pain

From squat depth and deadlift loading.

Elbow pain

From benching, lockout, and pressing volume.

Pec and bicep strains

From maximal bench and deadlift loading.

Keep training to total

Rehab around your programming

A tweak does not have to mean a deload to zero. We adjust loads and movements around the injury, keep you training the lifts you can, and build you back to your working weights and meet prep.

Train what you can

We find the lifts, ranges, and loads you can train safely while we treat the injury.

Fix the breakdown point

We identify where in the lift it goes wrong and why, then address it.

Back to the platform

A clear path back to maximal loads and meet prep, not endless deloading.

Our approach

How we treat powerlifting injuries

Assessment built on the big three
We assess the injury and how you squat, bench, and deadlift under load, to find exactly where and why it breaks down.
Hands-on plus loading
Manual therapy to settle symptoms, combined with a progressive loading programme that uses real barbell work and respects maximal-strength demands.
Train around it
We adjust loads, ranges, and movements rather than stopping you completely, so you keep training to total while we fix the injury.
Address the breakdown point
Powerlifting injuries usually show at a specific point in a lift. We work out the cause, technique, mobility, or a strength gap, and address it.
Back to maximal loads
A graded path back to your working weights and meet prep, so you return stronger and the injury does not recur.
Who this is for
Any powerlifter or strength athlete with pain or a recurring niggle in the squat, bench, or deadlift who wants to keep training and competing.

Questions? We have got answers

Will I have to stop lifting heavy?

Rarely to zero. We scale loads and adjust movements around the injury so you keep training to total where possible, rather than deloading completely. Total rest rarely fixes powerlifting injuries.

Do you understand powerlifting?

Yes. We assess and rehab around the squat, bench, and deadlift specifically, the setup, the sticking points, the loading, rather than generic exercises, and build you back to maximal loads.

Can you help me train through to a meet?

Often yes. We manage the injury and your loading through prep so you can compete, and we are honest if a lift genuinely needs backing off to protect you.

Do I need a referral?

No referral needed. You can book directly. We also accept Simplyhealth and Medicash cash plans.

What are your prices?

A new patient assessment is £75 for 45 minutes, including a full assessment, hands-on treatment, and a clear plan.
