Shin pain every time you run?
Shin splints (medial tibial stress syndrome) is pain along the inner edge of the shin bone, usually from a spike in running or impact load. It often starts as an ache that eases when warm, then progresses to pain that stops you running. Caught early it settles fast, ignored it can become a stress fracture.
- Aching pain along the inner shin, during or after running
- Tender to touch along the inner edge of the shin bone
- Worse with a training spike more miles, faster, or harder surfaces
- Eases when warm early on, then progresses to constant
- Both legs or one depending on your loading and mechanics
- Stops you running if pushed through and ignored
Causes and types
Why shin splints happen
Getting the specific cause right is what makes treatment work. We assess and treat:
Training load spikes
Too much, too soon, more miles, pace, or hills than the body is ready for.
Calf and foot weakness
Insufficient strength to absorb running impact.
Running mechanics
How you load and strike affecting stress on the shin.
Footwear and surfaces
Worn shoes or hard surfaces increasing impact.
Reduced bone load capacity
The bone not yet adapted to the running load.
Returning too fast
Coming back from a break without rebuilding gradually.
Our approach
How we treat shin splints
Rule out a stress fracture
We assess to distinguish shin splints from a tibial stress fracture, which needs a different, more cautious approach.
Settle and strengthen
We reduce the aggravating load, then progressively build calf, foot, and lower limb strength to absorb running impact.
Rebuild running
A graded return-to-running plan plus mechanics and footwear review, so the shins handle the load when you build back.

Shin Splints FAQs
How long do shin splints take to settle?
Caught early, often a few weeks with load management and strengthening. If ignored and pushed through, they take much longer and risk progressing to a stress fracture. Early action makes a big difference.
Can I keep running with shin splints?
Usually in a reduced form. We lower the aggravating load rather than stopping entirely where possible, and build strength alongside. If we suspect a stress fracture, that changes and needs more caution.
How do I know if it is a stress fracture?
Stress fractures tend to be a more focal, sharp pain that worsens and can hurt at rest or at night. Shin splints are usually a more diffuse ache along the shin. We assess to tell the difference and image if needed.
Will new trainers fix it?
Footwear can be a factor, but shin splints are usually about load outpacing capacity. New shoes alone rarely fix it, building strength and managing load is what lasts.
