Tennis Physio physiotherapy at a Liverpool clinic

Injury keeping you off the court?

Tennis combines explosive serving, rapid changes of direction, and thousands of repeated swings. That loads the shoulder, elbow, wrist, and lower limb, and the same injuries tend to recur if you treat the symptom but not the cause.

Common issues we see in tennis athletes:

  • Tennis elbow pain on the outside of the elbow from gripping and backhands
  • Shoulder pain from serving and overhead shots
  • Wrist pain from the grip and the load of every shot
  • Calf and Achilles pain from sprinting and pushing off
  • Knee pain from rapid changes of direction
  • Recurring niggles that flare every time you get back on court

What we treat

Tennis injuries we treat

We understand the specific demands of the sport and treat the injuries that come with it, including:

Tennis elbow

The classic, pain on the outside of the elbow from gripping, backhands, and overuse.

Shoulder pain

Rotator cuff and shoulder pain from serving and overhead shots.

Wrist pain

From the grip and repeated loading through every stroke.

Calf and Achilles injuries

From explosive sprinting, pushing off, and stopping.

Knee pain

From rapid changes of direction and loading on court.

Hip and groin strains

From lunging, reaching, and lateral movement.

Stubborn cases

Shockwave for tennis elbow

Tennis elbow that has lasted more than 6 to 8 weeks despite rest often needs more than exercises. Shockwave therapy can kick-start healing in stalled tendons, used alongside a loading programme.

Tennis elbow

Targets the stubborn extensor tendon pain that resists rest and keeps returning.

Paired with loading

Used alongside progressive tendon loading, the proven foundation of recovery.

3 to 6 sessions

Most patients see meaningful improvement within a short course of treatment.

Our approach

How we treat tennis injuries

Sport-specific assessment
We assess the injury and the demands of your game, serving, groundstrokes, movement, so the rehab targets what tennis actually loads.
Hands-on plus loading
Manual therapy to settle symptoms, plus a progressive loading programme for the tendons and joints that tennis stresses.
Fixing the cause
Tennis injuries often come from grip, technique load, or a strength gap. We address what is driving it so it does not simply recur.
Shockwave where needed
For stubborn tennis elbow and tendon pain, we offer shockwave therapy alongside loading to get stalled tendons moving.
Return to court
A graded return to hitting volume and intensity so the injury holds up when you build back.
Who this is for
Any tennis player with elbow, shoulder, wrist, or lower-limb pain that affects play, or a niggle that keeps returning.

Questions? We have got answers

Can you treat tennis elbow?

Yes, it is one of the most common things we see. Modern treatment is progressive tendon loading plus hands-on work, and for stubborn cases, shockwave therapy. Rest and braces alone rarely fix it long term.

Do I have to stop playing?

Usually not entirely. We typically modify your playing volume and which shots you hit while we treat the injury, rather than stopping tennis completely.

Why does my injury keep coming back?

Recurring tennis injuries usually mean the underlying cause, grip, technique load, or a strength gap, has not been addressed. We treat the cause, not just the flare.

Do I need a referral?

No referral needed. You can book directly. We also accept Simplyhealth and Medicash cash plans.

What are your prices?
