Trigger Finger physiotherapy at a Liverpool clinic

Finger catching, clicking, or locking?

Trigger finger happens when the tendon that bends your finger becomes irritated and struggles to glide smoothly through its sheath, causing the finger to catch, click, or lock, sometimes painfully. It is more common in the thumb, ring, and middle fingers, and it responds well to the right hand therapy.

  • Catching or clicking as you bend or straighten the finger
  • Locking the finger sticking bent and needing to be eased straight
  • A tender nodule or lump at the base of the finger in the palm
  • Stiffness especially first thing in the morning
  • Worse with gripping or repetitive hand use
  • Affecting work or daily tasks from buttons to tools

Causes and types

About trigger finger

Getting the specific cause right is what makes treatment work. We assess and treat:

Tendon sheath irritation

The flexor tendon catching as it passes through a tightened pulley.

Repetitive gripping

Repeated or forceful gripping irritating the tendon.

Associated conditions

More common with diabetes and some inflammatory conditions.

Thumb and finger involvement

Most common in the thumb, ring, and middle fingers.

Early vs established

Early cases respond faster than long-locked fingers.

Post-injury or overuse

Following a period of heavy or repetitive hand use.

Our approach

How we treat trigger finger

01

Assess the finger and hand

A detailed assessment of the affected finger, tendon, and how the whole hand moves and loads.

02

Hands-on and movement

Manual therapy, specific tendon gliding exercises, and load management to reduce the catching and improve smooth movement.

03

Splinting and load advice

Where helpful, splinting and guidance on modifying gripping, so the tendon can settle and glide freely again.

Trigger Finger FAQs

Can trigger finger be treated without surgery?

Often yes, especially when caught early. Hand therapy, splinting, tendon gliding, and load management resolve many trigger fingers without injection or surgery. Long-established or locked cases are more likely to need further intervention.

Why does my finger lock?

The flexor tendon that bends the finger gets irritated and thickened, so it struggles to glide through the pulley that holds it. It catches and can lock bent, needing to be eased straight.

Do you actually treat hand conditions?

Yes. Unlike most general physio clinics that refer hand problems on, we have a dedicated hand specialist who treats trigger finger and other hand and finger conditions directly.

Will I need an injection?

Not always. Many cases settle with conservative hand therapy. For stubborn or locked fingers, a steroid injection or surgical referral may be appropriate, and we will advise honestly if so.

What are your prices?

A new patient assessment is £75 for 45 minutes, including a full assessment, hands-on treatment, and a clear plan.
